Molly

The day a tiny baby Koala, weighing only 100g, came into care I thought her chances of survival were very slim indeed. Yet here she is now, weighing 210g and getting stronger everyday. Her fur has started to come through and is very light in colour and her little eyes are focusing on movement. Molly still has many obstacles to overcome before her release, but she is in good hands at present at the Australian Wildlife Hospital. Molly was found in the pouch of her very sick mother at Ashby in May and both were transferred to AWH.

Sadly Molly’s mother did not respond to treatment for her advanced septicaemia and she was euthanased a few days late An adult male Koala found at Seelands earlier this month and savagely attacked by a dog also had to be euthanased due to the severity of his injuries.

Earlier this year another 2 Koalas were euthanased after being hit by motor vehicles at Ashby. One suffering spinal injuries and the other a badly broken leg. An adult male, found at Ashby and suffering advanced Chlamydiosis was also euthanased.

Late last year an adult female carrying her back young and crossing Iluka road was struck by a car causing her joey to be thrown some distance and killed. Mother received head injuries and was transferred to AWH for treatment. After 6 weeks in care she was returned to Iluka (but this time far from the road) hopefully to breed again.

Several sightings of healthy koalas have been reported in the Waterview Heights area and even one at Nymboida. If members do happen to sight a Koala in the Clarence Valley please report its location to me as keeping these records is of great importance.

We greatly appreciate the help given to our Koalas by Friends of the Koala in Lismore and Australian Wildlife Hospital at Beewah. Jenifer, Barbara and Pat Koala Team.
