Thanks A Bunch

Thanks to the following for being there for Clarence Valley WIRES

Brooms Head Fires

A huge fire was burning around the Village of Brooms Head on the coast, east of Maclean. It was during the school holidays and many tourists were staying in and around the Broom. On the Thursday afternoon a small Swamp Wallaby, around 3 kg, was seen to emerge from the burnt out area at the top of the Caravan Park. It was not burnt, but must have been in shock as it hopped straight over the edge of the Lookout – a sheer drop of about 30 feet to Snapper Rock and the ocean below- plunging to the rocks at the bottom.

A family on holiday from The Channon, Greg & Pippa and their two children, Nathaniel and Vanessa, saw this happen and ran to find our member, Steph Schrader and tell her what they had seen. Steph bundled up some blankets and they went back to the Lookout. There is a vertical ladder over the side and against the cliff face, to enable the intrepid fishermen to get down to the rocks. Steph, Greg and Nathaniel climbed down to the first ledge, but could go no further.

Nathaniel took the blanket and climbed down the ladder until he could reach the very frightened Wallaby, wrap it in a blanket and slowly made his way back up the ladder to our WIRES carer. On examination it was realised that this poor creature had sustained a serious hip injury that sadly could not be fixed.

WIRES thanks Nathaniel for his great effort to retrieve this animal from the rocks below the Lookout. The climb down the ladder is not for the feint hearted and the climb back up with the Wallaby was not an easy one. So thank you to the Crane family, particularly Nathaniel, for their help at Brooms Head.

May 2008

Thanks to the generosity of Signcraft at the Harwood bridge, we now have, at no cost to WIRES, stickers giving the new rescue phone number to be stuck over the 0500 rescue number which appears on metal WIRES signs which are available to carers, indicating the animals are being cared for under licence. Any member who has one of the signs should contact Teresa Woodley or Dick Richards for the replacement number.

TWO GREAT BIRD DAYS

On 15th & 16th of September, the Branch held a “Birds Beyond Basics” course at the Grafton Civic Centre with Chris Lloyd and Lynn Gow. What a fantastic two days it was, for both experienced and new carers alike. We all came away with a lot more knowledge about our feathered friends, from chicks to adults.

It did not matter how much you thought you knew, we certainly learnt a lot more. Thank you to Chris and Lynn for two very enjoyable days and also our thanks must go to our Trolly Dollys, Mairi and Margi who kept us so well fed on both days. For those who put their name down for the course but did not attend, it was your loss.

It was a great effort Michael, considering how hard it must have been for you. Hope you are feeling better by now and are home again, annoying Sandra.

Joan Woodmore.

Thank You

I would like to thank Sandra and Michael Byrne, Barbara Clay and Joan Woodmore for making my Citizenship Day very special on the 11th September. They gave me lots of OZY gifts and I was overcome with their friendship and support on a very special day for me. On the 15th and 16th of this month was "Birds beyond the basics" with Chris Lloyd at Grafton. Everyone enjoyed this weekend course very much, and as I am a new volunteer for "Wires", this was one of the best experiences since I joined in May. The people who were unable to attend, really missed out, and I thought Chris Lloyd was just superb, making us all feel we were very important.

Thanks again.

Chris, on behalf of the BMC contacted ‘Spanbilt’ who offered to supply two aviaries at cost and free delivery from Brisbane. The aviaries supplied retail for $459 each They have now been delivered.

Many thanks to Tursa and Spanbilt

Thanks to media - 2009

Ed,

On behalf of WIRES Clarence Valley, I would like to thank you for the support that was given this organisation by way of publicity for our Rescue & Immediate Care Course for new members, held in Grafton in May 2009.

We received over 90 enquiries from residents of the Clarence Valley, who showed interest in knowing more about WIRES and ultimately we had 26 eager new members who attended a weekend of learning and are now ready to help with the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned Australian native wildlife throughout the Clarence Valley.

Our organisation always receives great support and recognition from the local media for which we are very grateful. Wee look forward to you continued support in the future.

Sandra Byrne.
